School board filing deadline passes
Local schools a mix of acclamation and May elections
Last Thursday marked the filing deadline for local school board elections. The school board elections will take place on May 7, with mail in ballots for all the school districts except for Alder, which is not holding an election. Ballots for school boards and contested special districts (Ruby Valley Hospital District) will be mailed April 17.
Alder School District #2 had one open position and one candidate file. James McDonald will be appointed by acclamation.
Sheridan School District #5 has two open trustee positions for three year terms on the ballot. Ridgley Elser and Kaylie Theis have filed for these positions.
Sheridan School also has a $62,829.25 elementary general fund levy on the ballot. Passage of this proposal will increase the taxes on a home with a market value of $100,000 approximately $13.77, on a home with a market value of $300,000 by approximately $41.31, and on a home with a market value of $600,000 by approximately $82.62, according to a sample ballot.
Twin Bridges School District #7 has two open trustee positions for three year terms. Luke Banks, Steve Collinge, Steve Janzen and Miranda Wheeler have filed for these positions and will appear on the May 7 ballot.
Harrison School District #23 has one open seat for a three year term. Ashlee Heavrin, Ann Hokanson, Warren W. Reeves and John M. Reid filed for this seat.
Ennis School District #52 has two open trustee positions for three year terms and a general fund mill levy. Levi K. Chandler, Dino Fanelli, Dustin Pederson, Kyle Stone, Justin Lee Stoner and Neal Zucker will appear on the ballot.
The general fund levy reads,” Shall the district be authorized to impose an increase in local taxes to support the general fund in the amount of $37,524.98 which is approximately .12 mills for the purpose of providing funds to support the General Fund for the proper maintenance and operation of the K-12 Program of the District for the 2024-25 school year beginning July 1, 2024. Passage of this proposal will increase the taxes on a home with the market value of $100,000 by approximately $0.16 per year, on a home with the market value of $300,000 by approximately $0.49 and on a home with a market value of $600,000 by approximately$0.97 per year. An increase in property taxes may lead to an increase in rental costs. The durational limit of the levy is permanent once approved by the voters, assuming the district levies that amount each year thereafter. However, lowering over-BASE tax levies in any year will lower the amount of permissively over-BASE levels in subsequent years.”
The Madisonian will feature candidate profiles prior to voters receiving mail ballots.
