Ennis High School grad coaches Colorado team to state championship
Sheffield turns around underdogs to win state title
A 1991 Ennis High School graduate has coached four Colorado boys high school basketball teams to state championships.
In his fourth year as head coach with the Yuma Indians, Ennis native Dave Sheffield led his team to a state championship victory on March 10. In addition to winning the state title, the Colorado High School Athletic Association named Sheffield the 2018 Class 2A boys basketball Coach of the Year.
Previously, as head coach with the Hi-Plains Patriots in Colorado, Sheffield won three state boys basketball championships.
Sheffield shared some of his keys to success. "1. A dedicated summer program," Sheffield wrote in an email. "We play 35 games on average in the summer at both the varsity junior varsity levels, to go with individual workouts three times a week. 2. Consistent weight program. 3. Building a culture where the individuals play for their teammates. Being selfless."
Sheffield is the son of Gordon and Kathy Sheffield, of Ennis.
