MT 41 S Bridge reopens

Repairs made
“Our top priority at MDT is, and will always be, public safety,” said Andy Cullison with the MDT Bridge Bureau.

“The Montana Department of Transportation promptly informed Madison County officials on Saturday, April 13, 2024, that the Montana 41 S bridge in Twin Bridges was ready to reopen immediately, bringing relief to all,” wrote Jennifer Martens, Public Information Officer Madison County Disaster and Emergency Services (DES).

“Our top priority at MDT is, and will always be, public safety,” said Andy Cullison with the MDT Bridge Bureau.  “Thank you to the residents of Twin Bridges and the surrounding area for your patience as we worked to restore access.”

The bridge was closed earlier last week following a special inspection that identified the reinforced concrete pier supporting the center span of the bridge was actively failing due to deterioration of the concrete supporting the steel girders, according to  the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT).

Due to the sudden, unexpected bridge closure on MT 41s in Twin Bridges, the Madison County Board of Commissioners approved Resolution 27-2024 on April 9,2024 to temporarily restrict traffic on Seyler Lane Bridge and Middle Road until further notice. Those areas will allow local traffic only not to exceed a weight limit of 10 tons (truck and trailer weight total).

MDT personnel worked rigorously to design and implement a solution. Repairs were made to the concrete pier wall foundation, bringing the bridge back up to standards, according to a press release from the MDT.

“Madison County extends its heartfelt gratitude to all residents and travelers for their patience and understanding during this unexpected event. Your cooperation has been invaluable,” said Martens.

MDT extended a special thank you to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, Madison and Beaverhead counties, first responders and many others. MDT staff will continue to monitor and inspect the bridge as part of its maintenance efforts. All bridge traffic resumed as normal on Saturday.
