County courthouse remodel project expected to break ground in June

“The bids came in well under budget and it's definitely going to happen,” said county commissioner Bill Todd.

The Madison County Courthouse remodel project is scheduled to break ground in June of 2026 and be completed by December. The project will be funded by bonds issued by the county that the voters approved in the 2025 election.

“The bids came in well under budget and it's definitely going to happen,” said county commissioner Bill Todd.

“The timeline right now is, we’re advertising for all the hazardous materials removal, like asbestos in lead paint. That has to come out of the parts that get demolished and some parts of the main building,” explained Todd. “That will be all complete by May, God willing. And then we'll break ground probably in June, and it has to be wrapped up by next December.”

The work to restore the 1875 courthouse was originally estimated to cost just over $11 million. The lowest bids opened came in just over $8 million. On May 6, 2025 voters approved the authority for the county to issue $10 million of bonds to fund the project.
