Animal activity during hunting season, summertime and just as animals prepare for the winter is often discussed. Bears and ungulates, hoofed mammals, and for this article’s purpose, elk, deer and antelope, may be less active in deep winter months, but their focus is keen.
Early fall and winter
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is investigating a grizzly bear mortality in the Eureka Basin of the south Gravelly Mountains, after a hunter reportedly shot the bear in self-defense Oct. 26.
Two separate grizzly bear attacks resulted in three injured hunters on the west side of the Gravelly Mountain range on Monday according to Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. It is unclear whether one or more bears were involved. FWP is asking hunters to leave the area, and the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest is closing Cottonwood Road.
