Patchwork Pals Quilt Guild presenting Quilts of Valor on Veterans’ Day

Twenty-four veterans — from all branches of the military and who served in a variety of different eras — will be honored for their service with Quilts of Valor during Sheridan School’s annual Veteran’s Day tea on Nov. 11.

Patchwork Pals Quilt Guild of the Ruby Valley, representing the Quilts of Valor Foundation, will be presenting quilts made by the Guild to local veterans for their service in the military. Quilts are presented to all military service members regardless of conflict, declared war or otherwise, in which they served.

Each quilt is pieced, quilted, and bound with love and admiration. There are three layers of the quilt, each with its own meaning: The top layer represents the community, the second layer (the batting) gives comfort and peace and healing, and the third layer, the backing, represents the strength of the recipient, the community and the nation. Quilts of Valor are lifetime awards, include labels branding them a Quilt of Valor, a certificate of authenticity, and are registered to each recipient with the QOV Foundation.

The Guild has been making Quilts of Valor and presenting them to service members and veterans in the Ruby Valley area for the past four years. This year will mark the 80th quilt presented. The Guild is planning to continue this effort, and is seeking information on local veterans to honor in the future. Veterans can be nominated by anyone, or can nominate themselves. To make a nomination, please contact guild president Patty Bates at (406) 865-0018.

The group estimates the cost of completing a Quilt of Valor to be around $200 each, which does not include the quilter’s time. Please contact the Guild If you’d like to donate in support of this work.

The mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor. Over 230,000 quilts have been awarded internationally in the program. To learn more about Quilts of Valor visit: www.qovf.org.
