Flyover Poem

February 24, 1993

I stared at the snow covered mountains below through my frost glazed airplane window. How deceiving are realities! I sit here in warmth and comfort in this self contained vehicle in the sky, only slightly aware that the true temperature of this altitude is incompatible with comfort, health, and probably life itself. There's something to be said for trust. There's something to be said for risk.

he temperature outside is evidenced by the scene far beneath me ... a frozen tundra of snow and ice; snow so deep in places that it is difficult to discern the definition of mountain. There are trees, barely visible from the air, pushing up from the snow in self identity. There are mountains only dusted with snow, interspersed with glimpses of dark, rich, fertile soil. There is frozen water within earth boundaries as lakes, rivers, and streams. Covering it all, as if in a blanket of security, are softly layered clouds of many hues. In some places, the mountains jut up tall enough to grab a cloud, pulling it down to rest upon its peak. In other places, the clouds themselves reach down to join with the frozen water, making it difficult to see where one ends and turns into the other.

The noise of the manmade airplane engine gives way to the imagined sound of silence below me. I wonder? Is this what God sees? The creation of God so lovingly nurtured by Nature. The beauty, the power, the OBVIOUS ORDER, the gentle tranquility... rises up to join with my spirit. Although my body is willingly trapped inside the plane, my soul is free to partake in joint communion with these gifts of God and Nature.

My spirit sees what my eyes cannot ... the aliveness of the world below me - deer and elk and bear - foraging for food, delighting in the winter snow; fish in all varieties, thriving beneath the frozen lakes and streams; seeds and plants buried beneath the black soil, just waiting their chance to pierce the topsoil and bloom.

Provided by God, nurtured by Nature; gratefully witnessed by me.
